UNDERTOW

FIELD NOTES / THE LISTENING LABORATORY

The mistakes have a sound.

Undertow is learning to DJ. Here are the experiments along the way: the methods that worked, the ones that only looked convincing on paper, and the ones we still can't agree on.

These are not releases or a gallery of machine-awarded winners. They are records of the work. The source, the attempted transformation, the counterexample and the uncertainty belong together.

Publication authority: the seven recordings below are byte-identical copies of finished retained PCM renders, listed with exact source identities in /lab/media/publication-manifest.json. That manifest is a proposal awaiting Adrian’s explicit approval; the wider audition bank, control renders and source WAVs are not proposed for publication and remain private.

Three minutes that explain the year.

The one-second silence

A Ghost Declines ends. Nothing happens — deliberately — and A Mouthful of Roll enters as a new fact. In a paired listen the short withdrawal held tension; the two-second version drifted into dead air. Both are here.

A rhythm that outlived its record

Ghost’s ordered rhythmic contour is transferred into Dauerversprechen’s entirely different material, given foreground, then yields. A reviewer recognised the inheritance across the timbral change; roughness and fatigue remain open caveats.

Don’t touch that fader

The sharpest pitch finding: on A Ghost Declines → Dauerversprechen, a blind listener preferred leaving the 120/132 tempo friction alone over every correction we offered. Then hear a +4% push on Leaning Cell against its original speed — acceleration adds urgency or flattens identity; decide for yourself.

One sound plays at a time. Every file is a byte-identical copy of the retained PCM WAV whose SHA-256 is declared in the manifest; nothing was re-generated.

Riding the pitch. ↗

Should 120 and 132 BPM meet in the middle? The first blind review preferred the friction. Twenty-two attempts across seven source pairs compare classic varispeed, pitch-preserving stretch, audible pitch rides, deliberate misalignment and leaving the records alone.

A public account of the original local audition; the seven-selection playable package above is proposed for publication and awaiting approval. No other retained audio is authorised.

Between records. ↗

The first executable Performance Compiler explored finite echoes that survive their parent, transferred rhythmic contours, negative space and measured replies. Twenty-four candidates. Two agent-selected finalists. Plenty of rejected material.

The laboratory precedes activation in production; browser playback and engineering tests are not musical approval.

WHERE THE EXPERIMENT GOES

From local laboratory to actual broadcast.

The resident DJ now has source-bound authoring and a bounded live execution path merged in PR #535. That is not a claim that the station was already performing the new music when this note was written. Release 12 subsequently deployed and passed release integrity checks, but two real DJ shadow renders were refused by a mis-scoped memory guard. The performance mode remained off and the original station audio continued; the correction is tracked in #537.

Eventually the same sound should be available in the 3D room, a plain audio stream, and longer authored transmissions. Undertow Live tracks the audio-first distribution work.
